Bob D*Y*L*A*N - Judas! (The Complete 1965-66 Recordings) Part Four

This seems like a good time to remind that Judas! is both an archive and something to be enjoyed without the difficulty/annoyance of having to search for and change discs. If you want to choose your Dylan concerts/sessions while on a long drive or having a BBQ here it is. I believe Judas! to be virtually complete today. But tomorrow it might not be. This is why Willard was willing to dedicate a separate Wormhole to this project before he closed up shop. If you have an upgrade or something missing (of musical value - Joan Baez singing while Dylan types doesn't count. Nor does hearing his harmonica playing in the background while someone else is being interviewed) please share. FLAC, WAV or 320 is preferred. Once I receive it, I will convert, tag the file to match the rest of the collection, and post the update/upgrade as a separate post.

Furthermore, when it comes to music, I consider myself knowledgeable but definitely not an expert. Dylan especially. The benefits (for me) of putting together these collections are researching, exploring learning and then sharing. Bob D*Y*L*A*N - Judas! (The Complete 1965-66 Recordings) Part One

So here it finally is, after three 1/2 years! To call this project a bitch would be a HUGE understatement. the lion's share of the work was done in late 2016 and a beta version was released in February 2017 in a small private forum. I was missing a few single edits to complete the set and finally got them a few months ago while working on the KHJ series.

My original idea was simply to arrange The Cutting Edge with Live 1966 so that these would work together and also to put all the sessions/concerts in a folder each. But as I started working I decided the only way to do it correctly was to include all of the 1965 copyright set ............ and Great Danes's 15-disc 1965 Revisited ...... and Vigotone's 26 disc Jewels and Binoculars and Crawling On The Cutting Room Floor. That wasn't enough - I added in all of the singles (in original 45 versions!) and the three LPs in mono and stereo, including known alternate mixes. This is the (damn near) complete Great White Wonder in proper context, in order, as complete as possible, in the best possible quality (for 320) and without having all of that annoying trouble of searching through multiple discs/volumes to get a complete session or show. In fact, many studio sessions have slates, count-ins, and endings restored that were not even included on The Cutting Edge!

1225 tracks. 85 hours. Over 11 and a half gigs. Every concert, studio recording, demo, private recording and interview that exists.  As you could imagine, some of this was a tough slog. Every track has to be individually re-tagged by hand. There are no track numbers. No worries though, it will load and play in the correct order. A small portion of the material is NOT 320 (1965 Revisited) but it's mostly interviews or other non-musical stuff. No big whoop. Going back through it in 2020, I fixed some errors/omissions, did some upgrades, tagged each track with the original source cover art. It's all spruced up!

As new performances are discovered and when I get them, I will post updates to this set so they fit in with the rest of the set.

That said, I can now finally share it all with you. But first, let me explain about the track/file numbers:

The History of the Bonzos (Deluxe BF Edition) Part 4: 1981-2007

Finally, the series is complete. This was the most difficult to put together, and maybe the tracklist doesn't look all that interesting, but IMO, this is the best of the bunch. What surprises me is how good the flow of this set is, and the quality of work throughout. "Sir Henry At Ndidi's Kraal" is edited to music portions only. All in all, it's pretty good and I hope you agree. As with the other parts, each track is tagged with its original cover or single label. The last two tracks are not errors: they end the collection by pulling it around full circle.

Let's Get Stoned - A Tribute to Bobby Keys (2019 BF Update)

Back in 2014, I was feeling sad about the loss of Bobby Keys and thought I'd share a compilation that I made back then, recently updated in 2019 by adding 8 tracks and seriously tweaking the playlist. I added some of his solo recordings (which have never seen any kind of digital release) and another surprise in the playlist!  With the stuff added, there's enough of his artistry here to give a pretty clear idea of what an iconic player he really was.

It begins, perfectly enough, with a request from Bobby to get stoned and then moves on to a look at his not necessarily his best, but some of his most important early career sessions.  Following say, from track 10 through 16, is the pop Bobby Keys, finishing up with the deeper cuts and a closer look at the musician.  I hope you like it.

Dedicated to my cuz Frank, who long ago hipped me to much of this when I was too young and geeky - when that was a bad thing! Merry Christmas!

Blind Faith (BlankFrank Deluxe Edition)

OK, so for Disc One: Masters and Disc Two: Alternates, I upgraded the original LP from an HD 96/24 source (and it really sounds nice!), added the super-rare (but not very good) Island "Change Of Address" promo 45. Filling out the disc is every alternate studio (completed) recording known to exist. The Rick Gretch "solo" tracks, "Exchange And Mart" and "Spending All My Days" are said to include George Harrison, Denny Laine (?!?!?) Along with Clapton and Winwood, so let's just agree to call it Blind Faith-ish, therefore justifying its inclusion HERE.

What were two CDs on the commercially available "Deluxe Edition" are now four, as you can see, a'la the Layla box set. Though I had 2 discs worth of additional jams/rehearsals, there was not much musical value, so the 2001 deluxe edition jams are all that are included here with one nice addition.

Disc Four is a typical BF concert taken from four sources and sequenced as it would have been performed toward the end of the tour.  In the last few shows, they played "Sunshine of Your Love".  The version included here is not very good, but it's the best complete performance I could find.  It took some time to make sure the transitions were as smooth as possible and given the variable quality here, it's really quite listenable and for now, the closest thing we have to a complete BF concert.

Finally, artwork, photos, BF band info/research were included and recording dates were added for all tracks. This is what I believe to be the final word and the only complete (but listenable) anthology on Blind Faith

The original comp (posted on a private forum where I subject its few members to my projects before they make it here) was posted almost two years ago and, stumbling on this recently, I thought I could do better. And I did. 40 minutes added, tracks upgraded and rarities added to it, and solo singles were added too. It came out really nice, the flow is better. When you stop to consider this is nearly all of his output, it's even more amazing. Ray was the whimsy in the MB. I think he prevented them from taking themselves too seriously. May 8th, 2011, is the centennial of the birth of the man, Robert Johnson, known as the King of the Delta blues, the James Dean of the Crossroads, the one born to be gone. More people know his name & legend from a Ralph Macchio movie from the '80s which perpetuated the story of how Johnson met the Dark Dude one moonless night at a crossroads in Mississippi in order to learn how to play the guitar, all in exchange for his soul. This young upstart seemingly came out of nowhere although he was hanging around juke joints of the time - rural shotgun houses set back in the woods - that served as the main adult entertainment centers for the blacks of the Delta south. He pestered already established players like Son House to let him play between his & Willie Brown's sets on the weekends, only to have the patrons beseech them to stop his infernal racket.

Two years later, Johnson caught a set with Shines & Brown & requested another chance to sit in between breaks.  According to Shines, "And that boy got started off playing...and when he got through, all our mouths were standing open. All! He was gone!"

The truth is probably more prosaic & mundane. There are stories of young men of the time learning the guitar by playing in cemeteries late at night. Johnson was probably woodshedding for those two years while hoboing around the country by train. He earned his living while honing his chops by playing on street corners on market days in "head-cutting " duels with other street musicians. He was also a quick study, having already taught himself the diddley bow & harmonica before tackling the intricacies of slide guitar in the blues vernacular. He was talented enough by then to be recommended by H.C. Speir, a Jackson, MS record store owner who was also a sometimes talent scout for the American Record Corporation (ARC). They arranged for Johnson's first recordings to take place in San Antonio, Texas in 1936. He laid down the tracks for his first 16 numbers in his repertoire. The later 13 tracks would be recorded in the sweltering heat of a Dallas warehouse in the summer of 1937. He didn't make much for the recordings, 29 in all, plus outtakes, but he had enough left over for another fancy suit or two. He had a regional hit with "Terraplane Blues", but otherwise his records sold poorly.

He still continued with wandering ways. He was a skilled professional by this time as evidenced by his recorded tracks. Where he played on weekends required a loud attack & memorable tunes & lyrics to excite the weekend crowd. Johnson sometimes sounds like three people playing - his notes are that complex & complete. He always had an eye for the ladies, & some of his songs were songs of seduction ("Come On In My Kitchen") while many were songs of rambling & the open road. His latter half of songs show a darker, more resigned outlook on his fate. Songs such as "If I Had Possession Over Judgement Day", "Me And The Devil" & "Stones In My Passway" showed the consequences of his sins, while still enjoying the fruits of his labor ("Travelling Riverside Blues"). His masterpiece is "Love In Vain", an ode to utter desolation & regret. His lines are written like Zen koans ("When the train left the station, it had two lights on behind...") to his utter undoing at the loss of his lover ( Well, the blue lights were my blues, & the red lights were my mind..."). It is a song of foreboding & longing. There is no redemption. There is no hope. 

His death in 1938 remains a mystery to most. The accepted wisdom is that he was poisoned by a jealous husband & died several days later, some saying his death resulting from pneumonia he developed from the poisoning.  The conventional wisdom is that likely he died in Greenwood, MS & was buried in the Little Zion Church cemetery. Eyewitness accounts have pinpointed where his grave should lie, although it's not considered the actual spot. Does it really matter? He wanted his body to be buried by the highway so his old evil spirit "could catch a Greyhound bus & ride". There are supposedly three gravesite markers in various locations, but they all mean the same thing. He's got rambling on his mind.

Johnson started the "27 Club". It's fairly exclusive & usually only admits fellow musicians as members. Brian Jones was the next member. It last admitted Kurt Cobain. Greil Marcus said of Johnson ( & unknowingly, of many others), "Like a good American, Johnson lived for the moment & died for the past". The blue lights were my blues. The red lights were my mind.

About this collection:

This all started a couple of months ago when I ran across the now more or less authenticated "third" photo of Robert Johnson as found a few years ago by Zeke Schein. It mentioned Johnson's 100th birthday coming up & made me think a good compilation set was in order. Thanks to the hard work & heavy lifting of Blank Frank & the heroic travails of "." in providing this magnificent album cover, we have this amazingly assembled collection of Robert Johnson's complete output as interpreted by a vast & varied lineup. Much of Johnson's music can sound dour & fatalistic, but it can also rock with a primitive boogie that was really the sound of rock and roll in its embryonic stages. These covers show how his songs could translate to today's music, sounding timeless, ancient & euphoric at the same time. Lucinda Williams takes "Ramblin' On My Mind" for a quick & sexy stroll. Patti Smith also surprises with a slinky & drunken take on "Come On In My Kitchen". The legendary Dion does a version of "Terraplane Blues" that shows why Robert caught the eye of the ladies ( & probably led to his doom). Eric Clapton is represented by several turns with Johnson's music. Cream's " Crossroads' was not only one of the best interpretations of Johnson's music, it showed what his prowess only hinted at in the mainly acoustic '30s. The Stones' version of " Love In Vain" is one of the cornerstones in their recording history. It's one of the few occasions where the student has learned a little too well from the master. It's a set of songs that flow like the Mississippi while there are whirlpools of danger. The hellhounds are there in the distance. The blues walk like a man.

A note about Robert Johnson:

It's been reported throughout the years that Robert Jonson's 78's were recorded at a faster speed than normal, up to 20% faster. Whatever the reason for that ( it's been said that it was done by Vocalion Records to "jazz" up the sound), there's a website:http://www.globalgroovers.com/?s=ROBERT+JOHNSON&submit=Search that has the original two albums of Johnson's material released by Columbia Records at the corrected speed. These are highly recommended to really appreciate his truer sound. It's like watching Chaplin's early silent movies at the corrected speed. It just makes more sense.
