The Complete Fleetwood Mac Singles Collection

Posting this now to wish Lindsey Buckingham a quick recovery of his heart and vocal cords.

Lindsey Buckingham to FM 1974: We're a package deal.  Stevie joins FM along with me
Stevie Nicks to FM 2018: Either Lindsey goes or I go.

This compilation took a tremendous amount of time and energy and I'm not only relieved to have it finally finished and posted but also delighted how good it turned out!  IMHO, this is the only collection that tells the complete tale of every member (except for later, recruited-for-tour members - they are not represented unless they collaborated with original members) in the context that it actually happened in.

So it works like this - all FM singles are represented with both sides of all of their 45s.  Instances where FM was the backing back for another artist, I mostly included both sides too. Solo singles get an A-side only, unless super-rare and/or super-good.  All UK and US singles are included in their original mixes/edits (note: including original mono mixes for the Peter Green era singles - thank you Prof. Stoned!) and I included a few others if I thought were needed to listenability and balance. I believe following this method was fair and was the only reason I included some of these Bob Welch and Danny Kirwin sides.

There are quite a few rarities and not being a Mac expert, there might be an omission or two.  If so, please help me by pointing it out and, even better, supply me with the missing track.  I can update the collection quickly and easily. In fact, tracks that are posted with ** at the end of the title are ones that the actual 45 mixes could not be found and I included LP or video versions that were as close as I could get.  If anyone can help with those tracks, I'd really be grateful!

The set is eye-opening in other ways, such as how good and diverse the post-Green/pre-Buckingham period was.  And the first A-sides for the '75 self-titled LP were McVie, not Nicks or Buckingham - they weren't taking any chances! Finally, the final couple volumes deserve a spin - the material is surprisingly good. I believe this collection does a great job of showing enough detail while keeping it interesting and listenable.  I hope you agree!

All @320 and each track is tagged with its label or picture sleeve.

You left out the years of physical abuse in between. https://www.ajc.com/entertainment/celebrity-news/stevie-nicks-abused-lindsey-buckingham-new-biography-says/cSdNnwXUAk4lceEtDx760J/

Thanks everyone for your kind comments. This project was a labor of love and took about 5 months to get it completed.

@Brett Allen I have not read the article (and I will) but my life experience tells me that close, intimate relationships are opaque and nearly impossible for an outsider to look into objectively. Add to that someone who might have an agenda to be "right" or to make the other person look bad or to cover up their own sins. I'm not saying that's what happened here. It's just what I typically see in real life. So I generally take these claims with a grain og salt.

"You left out the years of physical abuse in between." Of course, I wouldn't know but Lindsay has always come off as pretty intense, certainly in his vocal delivery. I just read the article and what stood out to me is the part about Lindsay being upset that Stevie's songs performed better than his.

I remember reading a Lindsay interview years ago, probably in Musician or Rolling Stone where he said something to the effect: "I think what I bring to the band is the ability to take songs that Stevie and Christine bring in and shape them into something that works." No, not bitter at all.....

Can't begin to describe how fun and revelatory this collection has been. I have all the Mac albums (well, not those Billy Burnette ones) and have been a special collector of every solo bit of Lindsey's music. I also have lots of Bob Welch and Peter Green.

But this collection is stunning in the way it reveals what was going on exactly when - it really tells a story. Especially the post-Mac solo singles by those guys just mentioned, and Danny Kirwan - I mean, I'll bet that even if Mick Fleetwood heard this collection he'd be amazed at how much is covered and the story it tells.

So thank you ,thank you, thank you for this.

This is AWESOME, thanks so much!!!

Hopefully you have one for Genesis/Peter Gabriel/Phil Collins/Mike + the Mechanics etc! :D

BlankFrank said...

@urbaurba Yes I have and looked into it about 2 years ago. part of the problem was getting my hands on single minxes and I thought that no one but me would be interested. Thanks to you that idea has been put to rest. Thanks for your comment.

Darren said...

Did you think about including Peter Green's work with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers in your collection?
If so, there are three pre-season Fleetwood Mac singles you could add . . .
Sitting in the Rain b/w Out of the Blue
Curly b/w Rubber Duck &
Double Trouble b/w It Hurts Me So.
Also, the European maxi-singles of the live version of Silver Springs taken from The Dance include, Gold Dust Woman, Over My Head and Go Insane; while the European maxi-single of Temporary One has To Your Own Way, Songbird and Gypsy.

Wow what a list

Great to see the Zoo single Shaking the cage included.

As with everything else on the blog, this is a wonderful achievement.

Disc 2 - Vietnam Rose; the entry on discogs.com suggests this is not the Tramp that involves Fleetwood Mac members:

BlankFrank said...

@Anon, thanks for your comment, about Vietnam Rose, I went back & forth on this because of the contradictory info available. In the end, I included it because of the AllMusic article linked below (which of course could be wrong too).

I also rejoin the ranks of "thank you"-ers.

Fabulous comp that made me reappreciate the Mac. I reorganised all this music to my own listening pleasure (themed discs rather than one big chronology) and there was some stuff I hadn't heard that I think is wildly underrated. For example, everyone lauds Bob Welch's albums on Capitol which for me are mostly very "paint by the numbers" disco-AOR-rock, but I thought most of his RCA singles ("Remember", I'll Dance Alone" "Two To Go") were great

Re:
"I remember reading a Lindsay interview years ago, probably in Musician or Rolling Stone where he said something to the effect: "I think what I bring to the band is the ability to take songs that Stevie and Christine bring in and shape them into something that works." No, not bitter at all.…"

Well he would and should be as I think there is no doubt that the arrangement genius in the band was clearly Buckingham. Nicks would often bring these long, rambling demos in (like a 14 or 16 minute version of "Sara", but she's no Bob Dylan) and then they - but mostly Buckingham - knocked them into shape. Would "Don't Stop" be the same bright snappy song without Buckingham's contributions to McVie's song? Maybe, but I doubt it.

Epic post with a lot of dedicated research. Wish you would re-up.

Stupendous effort. A re-up would be a blessing.

Looks great. Any chance of re uploading?

The "Go Your Own Way" single lists "Silver Springs" as 4:33, but here and elsewhere, it appears as 4:49. Was the time wrong on the single, or is there some shorter edit impossible to find online?

Greetings! Sorry, links to volumes 9-10 are dead. Could you reupload them please? Thanks a lot! Alex

Hello Frank - or do you prefer Blank ;),
Your singles collections are phenomenally comprehensive and painstakingly researched. Is there any possibility of getting them in a lossless format like flac? MP3 simply doesn't do your hard work justice. FM, Elton, Roxy, Tull, etc. - would love to have all (and whatever else I've yet to discover on your site) in a high quality format.
Respect,
Jay
