Jethro Tull - With You There To Help Me: The Singles and EPs 1967-99

Another Tull compilation? There have been too damn many box sets and greatest hits collections that recycle the same material. Further, with the Steven Wilson deluxe reissues they take a deep dive into each album. Sometimes it seems too deep, at least for me. This collection evens out both and creates an even-handed view of their career through 1999, including some material that even Steven Wilson missed. By putting the focus on the singles and EPs, Ian Anderson's and Jethro Tull's career comes into perspective.

This comp may actually "wind-up" in Ian's hands: I scored front row tix for Mr. Anderson and his current crew and I hope to share this with him via a flash drive after the show. The last time I saw him was 3 of the 4 nights they played at the Forum during the Passion Play tour in '73. I celebrated by taking different drugs each night I went. Those were the days!

So, I really tried to get the actual single mixes/edits and when I couldn't, I researched and did the best I could to recreate them. you'd think that with the Steven Wilson reissues, it'd be easy to find them all, but that definitely wasn't the case. So when you see these as "BF Edit or some such with "BF" in it, I had to get creative. When the comp enters the CD era, I included all of those tracks included on the CD Eps.  Is it too long? Did I forget anything? Please let me know what you think! All @320 with original labels/sleeves embedded! I also went through and put stars [**] next to the tracks that are not currently commercially available on CD.

Please note on 15 February part three (only), has been upgraded with 2 tracks and added ten more total added. Thanks a bunch Colin!

Dedicated to my old friend James Thomas!

  1. Jethro Tull - With You There To Help Me
While I have been a fan of the U.S. mainstream servings of the group since 1973/7th grade when someone gave me a copy of Aqualung, I was never really affluent regarding the matter. Hence, I had lost interest in them by the 80's. I have already listened to the first half of this post and it seems to confirm that America actually shunted a lot of Tull greatness as the MTV(Empty-V) knife sliced the center stage of musical spotlight into thinner and thinner servings. I must have missed out on the over done boxing/repackaging alluded to by BlankFrank...or, I was just too busy to notice. ALL of that is irrelevant because I have never had a lightbulb come on with the intensity that this set brings to my cognizance. It felt like I had been hit over the head with smooth flowing enlightenment in the shape of a 16-pound sledge hammer. Whatever ingredients went into this recipe...the final result was the realization that I had been eating cheeseburgers when I could have had steak. Despite the pioneer mentality of my palate, the group had been short-changed for all those years. Blame it on whatever - but, understand: THIS is a completely different menu! If you think this restaurant is 'swinging'...forget the veal. It's time for Jethro Tull 7-course culinary magic.
The waitress ain't too bad either! Parsley garnish? I think not!
    Thank you, BlankFrank!
    This stake is RARE...

  4. I did notice one omission though, "It All Trickles Down" from the Bends Like A Willow single. I can supply it to you if you'd like, as well as the actual edits of "Bends Like A Willow" and "Dot Com."

  8. Frank, I just sent you an email with the 3 tracks (Bends Like A Willow, Dot Com, and It All Trickles Down). Disregard the first one I sent, the second one has the 320 MP3s.

  9. @HarryHarmonica51, I mean that many of these have been buried on the Steven Wilson deluxe remixed-with-bonus-tracks collections. I think Stormwatch is the latest. This is also a good time to say that Steve Wilson remixes have NOT been used here; not because I don't like them, but because they're not authentic mixes.

  10. The set has just been updated, upgrading and adding ten tracks. I found that (stupidly) missed two UK CD EPs: Living In The (Slightly More Recent) Discs 1 & 2. and Thanks to Colin, the "Bends Like a Willow" CD Single has been upgraded to actual single edits and a missing song added!

  11. Thank You Frank

I have been a dedicated Tull follower for years, they were different, with the flute being a mainstay of their sound.
Appreciate the work involved in getting this share together.

    Regards

  17. I will comment later on this wonderful Tull collection - a godsend or morelike a Franksend! However just wanted to say that HAAR's blog Good Music, now states at the supplied URL: *Blog has been removed*. Was HAAR aware, and is there anything we mortals can do to see his site, or is he planning to launch it elsewhere?
