Cream - Like a Bearded Rainbow

I put this together after listening to Clapton's "A Life In 12 Bars" OST. This time though, It'd take Clapton, Baker, and Bruce and tell their complete story, including many that haven't ever been attempted yet. Each volume tells a different story and is designed to stand on its own. A LOT of effort was put into making these listenable and enjoyable. I hope you will all agree. Special thanks to Burt Kocain for supplying artwork!! All is at @320 and I'll try to give you my thoughts and reasoning for each volume. Here goes!

Like A Bearded Rainbow 01 - Pre-Cream Recordings (1:40)

Newly remastered and reconfigured to play the mono LP first, as that's what I believe would have been the go-to version in '66. No bonus tracks here or on any of the other regular LP releases. Just Fresh Cream exactly as it was created and meant to be heard.

Once again from a recently remastered SHM and IMO the best sounding version of this classic album. Once again, the mono is moved to the front and any bonus tracks are adios amigos.

A complete and
for its age a good  recording. I did a lot of research including listening to other early live Cream shows. This is the one. Nicely recorded and they are in pretty good form, trying to break into the USA. Their next visit to the USA is going to be a much different story!

Their first number one album, in fact, this what most of us were listening to nonstop 50 years ago. This is once again the 2014 Japanese SHM version which I believe has the best sound.

10 Steppin' Out [10 March 1968 Winterland San Francisco] 13:39
11 Xx Traintime [8 March 1968 Winterland San Francisco] 7:03
12 Toad [7 & 8 March 1968 Fillmore West San Francisco] [Extended Version] 17:39
13 I'm So Glad [15 October 1967 Grande Ballroom Detroit] 9:38

The bulk of these were taken from 192/24 HD conversions of Live Cream and Live Cream 2. If you see "XX", it means that I had no choice but to use Wheels of Fire tracks, but I used the remixes from the Those Were The Days Box set. Other versions either sounded bad or were not Cream at their best. This is sequenced to present a typical Cream concert from this tour.   I'm So Glad is from October, because I couldn't find a listenable version from March!

15 Strange Brew (Dennis Drake Remaster) 2:50
16 I Feel Free (Dennis Drake Remaster) 2:53

This finishes their albums and I give a nod to the first Cream LP I ever owned (Best Of) and also to Dennis Drake who seems to be much loved by audiophiles for his '80s and '90s remasters. Personally, I'm ambivalent about his work. Remember EC's 1988 Crossroads boxset and Cream's Those Were The Days? That's
Dennis Drake! Oddly, Best Of Cream has never seen a CD/Digital release, so I decided that it'd fit just fine here and I also thought that others would have fond memories of the LP as I did. Goodbye uses, as with the other original LPs, the 2014 Japanese SHM remaster.

Like A Bearded Rainbow 08 - Farewell Tour Oct 1968 (1:25)
1 White Room (Live 4 October 1968 Oakland Coliseum) 5:41
2 Politician (Live 4 October 1968 Oakland Coliseum) 5:09
3 Sunshine Of Your Love (Live 4 October 1968 Oakland Coliseum) 5:28
4 Crossroads [Live 20 October 1968 San Diego] 4:03
5 Spoonful [Live 19 October 1968 The Forum Inglewood] 17:26
6 Deserted Cities Of The Heart (Live 4 October 1968 Oakland Coliseum) 4:34
7 Passing The Time (Live 4 October 1968 Oakland Coliseum) 10:48
8 I'm So Glad [Live 19 October 1968 The Forum Inglewood] 6:32
9 Traintime [Live 19 October 1968 The Forum Inglewood] 7:55
10 Sitting On Top Of The World [Live 20 October 1968 San Diego] 5:05
11 Toad [Live 19 October 1968 The Forum Inglewood] 12:52

Here's the hat-trick of including one version of every song performed at the three California dates that were recorded for the Goodbye LP. This time though, there are no duplicate performances from Goodbye. The sound of the set is really nice, with tracks taken from Live Cream 2 (HD 192/24), A Life In 12 Bars, Those Were The Days and some boots. This is sequenced, like volume 6, to represent a typical show at the time. The only exception is Passing The Time which is the other song Baker would use for his drum solo. The performances on that track are a bit rougher, but the song wasn't played very often. Had to include it for that reason!

Here are their complete singles mostly all in their original mixes. I say "mostly because by the time of Wheels Of Fire, the CSG process began to be used, which is stereo mastered partly out of phase so if you bought a "stereo mono compatible" record, it will play in (folded down) mono or in (kinda fucked up) stereo. Few complained about it at the time, but these days those folks at the Steve Hoffman Forum are screaming the loudest. Add to that by 1968 if there was a mono mix, like on "White Room" or "Crossroads", by all reports (and my ears if I could find it) these are fold downs. So for that reason, I've had no choice but to offer stereo mixes of the 1968 and later singles. But you're not really missing much. At the end are French EPs that have unique mono mixes. All tracks are individually tagged with its own label or cover art.

Volume 10 is your one-stop-shop of everything that doesn't elsewhere. Every known studio outtake, alternate mix, and variation that exists is presented here in chronological order. "The Coffee Song" was released commercially in the late '80s (if I remember correctly) but is found here because it doesn't fit anywhere else. The irony is that it actually sounds like belongs here. It IS an outtake that was added to a greatest hits collection. At three hours long, this is by far the longest volume and I consider it to be the volume you need to have, but not the one you need to listen to. However, rest assured multiple versions of each track I had were compared to give the best sounding version.

Every known broadcast presented in chronological order. I mixed the BBC Transcription discs (better quality) with tracks where only off-air (home-taped) exist. To my ears, they play just fine. I like hearing the whole show. A highlight is the Swedish Radio Concert. Great performances and sound.

A distillation of Baker's, Bruce's and Clapton's best session work during and after Cream. A lot of effort went into this, and frankly, I'm very pleased with the way it turned out. The first version of this ran over four hours and with hours of listening and soul-searching, I was able to take it down to two. Every track here has a reason to be here, and I believe many who listen to this will be pleasantly surprised and happy to discover some of the gems hidden in this set.

This is some of the most Cream-ish and added in some of the best of their official post Cream work. With this volume, sequencing it chronologically won't cut it. So this was made as if it were a quasi-White Album. A couple of surprises and rarities are included to keep it all interesting. I really tried to keep it all fairly balanced between the three former members. Along with Volume 12, this is my personal favorite volume. I hope you give it a listen all the way through.

So there we have it! Your comments both positive and otherwise are welcome. I forgot to say this directly, but as I was putting this together, I threw out the 80 minute-per-disc rule. Each volume took as long as it needed to take, but everything here, as I said earlier, is here for a reason. My goal was to present a complete exploration of their work and for each volume to stand alone and be enjoyable as both a listening experience and as an archival piece.

  5. BF,

You are truly one of rock and roll's greatest archivists. You should be working for the record companies. Your knowledge and vision of completeness is stellar.

  13. Thanks for all this work - Best of Cream was the first LP I bought in 1969 with pocket money from school holiday job. I'd fallen in love with the LP cover (not the corny one with vegetables one but the Aussie version with the guys on the stairs with the mirror background) earlier when a fellow schoolmate brought it to class - hadn't heard the music inside but those guys looked so cool I had to have it. Little did I know the music was so good inside that it fired my last 60 years interest in rock music.

  24. I cracked a smile at the phrase about Wheels of Fire--"what most of us were listening to nonstop 50 years ago"--true enough, and I still have that Atco double LP with its Gold Record RIAA sticker that I listened to in my bedroom while maybe doing my homework. Listening to your wonderful upload right now, casting from my laptop to the big speakers across the living room. Sounds magnificent. It's all coming back. Especially looking forward to that long "Spoonful" which was my favorite cut. Thank you very much for the unimaginable amount of work that went into these uploads and your blog. I just found it...just scratching the surface. Many thanks.

  25. Hi there.
    A fantastic labour of love.
A real shame that the Winterland March 10th tapes went up in flames in the warehouse fire 10 years ago or so. 'Stepping' Out' and I'm pretty sure 'SOYL'come from that show. What else did we miss as no audience tapes have ever surfaced other than mis dated ones?
I live in hope that they will turn up some day.
