The Jimi Hendrix Masters Part Two: Live

Here's part two and the completion of the project of organizing Jimi's officially recorded output. Now the fan can finally make sense of and find context for his complete career.

One of the personal benefits for me in compiling these projects is that it sets me off onto an exploration of the subject. Most often, I don't know where it will lead, but very often, my understanding of the project has considerably changed by the time it's posted. In this case - the live masters - it's not how much has been released. It's how haphazardly it has been and continues to be released -  as you will soon see.

Here are some notes about how this was compiled. I followed the same format as the studio set and  any or all parts will mesh together:

19700530-01- Blue Suede Shoes [Rehearsal] (In The West LP)
[Year][Month][Date]-[performance order] - Song Title (Original Release)

Part Nine - Live Polydor/Reprise (1966-74)
Part Ten - Live Alan Douglas (1975-95)
Part Eleven - Live Experience Hendrix (1997-Pres) (BF Additions are here too!)
Part Twelve - Live Dagger Records
Part Thirteen - Live Session Man

I followed record releases, but where possible I used one source. Let me illustrate using one day as an example. You'll see what I mean about Jimi being ill-served by those charged with his recorded legacy
Part Nine - Live Polydor/Reprise (1966-74)
19700530-01- Blue Suede Shoes [Rehearsal] (In The West LP)
19700530-03- Johnny B. Goode (First Show) (In The West LP)
19700530-15- Lover Man (In The West LP)
19700530-22- Purple Haze (Soundtrack Recordings from the Film)

Add in Part Ten - Live Alan Douglas (1975-95)
19700530-01- Blue Suede Shoes [Rehearsal] (In The West LP)
19700530-03- Johnny B. Goode (First Show) (In The West LP)
19700530-07- Freedom [First Show] (Jimi Plays Berkeley CD Single)
19700530-10- Ezy Ryder [First Show] (Band of Gypsys 2 LP)
19700530-15- Lover Man (In The West LP)
19700530-16- Stone Free (Band of Gypsys 2 LP)
19700530-17- Hey Joe (The Jimi Hendrix Concerts CD)
19700530-19- Machine Gun (Johnny B. Goode LP)
19700530-22- Purple Haze (Soundtrack Recordings from the Film)

And you'd think adding Part Eleven - Live Experience Hendrix (1997-Pres) would complete the Berkeley recordings, right? Wrong!
19700530-01- Blue Suede Shoes [Rehearsal] (In The West LP)
19700530-03- Johnny B. Goode (First Show) (In The West LP)
19700530-07- Freedom [First Show] (Jimi Plays Berkeley CD Single)
19700530-07- Red House [First Show] (West Coast Seattle Boy CD)
19700530-10- Ezy Ryder [First Show] (Band of Gypsys 2 LP)
19700530-12- Introduction (Live at Berkeley: 2nd Show CD)
19700530-13- Pass It On (Straight Ahead) (Live at Berkeley: 2nd Show CD)
19700530-14- Hey Baby (New Rising Sun) (Live at Berkeley: 2nd Show CD)
19700530-15- Lover Man (In The West LP)
19700530-16- Stone Free (Band of Gypsys 2 LP)
19700530-17- Hey Joe (The Jimi Hendrix Concerts CD)
19700530-18- I Don't Live Today (Live at Berkeley: 2nd Show CD)
19700530-19- Machine Gun (Johnny B. Goode LP)
19700530-20- Foxey Lady (Live at Berkeley: 2nd Show CD)
19700530-21- Star-Spangled Banner (Live at Berkeley: 2nd Show CD)
19700530-22- Purple Haze (Soundtrack Recordings from the Film)
19700530-23- Voodoo Child (Slight Return) (Live at Berkeley: 2nd Show CD)

because both shows were recorded with very little song overlap, it's clear both were intended for a concert film/multi-record set. The first show has already trickled out over four different releases. So on certain occasions, such as this, the Band Of Gypsys concerts, the Winterland Concerts, and Woodstock, I completed these with BF Additions. That way, major concerts have complete shows. There's not a lot of them. They were added when I thought it was called for; to fill in details that are missing from important commercial releases.

With BF Additions:
19700530-01- Blue Suede Shoes [Rehearsal] (In The West LP)
19700530-02- Fire [First Show] (BF Addition)
19700530-03- Johnny B. Goode (First Show) (In The West LP)
19700530-04- Hear My Train A'Comin' [First Show] (BF Addition)
19700530-05- Foxy Lady [First Show] (BF Addition)
19700530-06- Machine Gun [First Show] (BF Addition)
19700530-07- Freedom [First Show] (Jimi Plays Berkeley CD Single)
19700530-08- Red House [First Show] (West Coast Seattle Boy CD)
19700530-09- Message to Love [First Show] (BF Addition)
19700530-10- Ezy Ryder [First Show] (Band of Gypsys 2 LP)
19700530-11- Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) [First Show] (BF Addition)
Now both shows are complete and the first show is a fine performance! Why has only half of it been released?

Also importantly, I used the same source for a group of concerts, so wherever possible, they can be enjoyed with consistent mixes. So that the above 19700530-15- Lover Man (In The West LP), 19700530-16- Stone Free (Band of Gypsys 2 LP), 19700530-17- Hey Joe (The Jimi Hendrix Concerts CD), 19700530-19- Machine Gun (Johnny B. Goode LP), and 19700530-22- Purple Haze (Soundtrack Recordings from the Film) are all sourced from Experience Hendrix's Live at Berkeley: 2nd Show CD. I've found that in most cases, the more current the mix, the more likely it is to have better sound.

The exceptions are the Band Of Gypsys LP, because these are the just about the only recordings mixed and edited by Jimi himself and Live at Monterey because the Experience Hendrix version is dull sounding. I used the 1986 Alan Douglas produced CD.

It's likely that there will be a few errors. If you find any please note it in the comments and I'll get 'em fixed!
